Review Of Link3 Fiber To Home Broadband In Bangladesh

link3 logo

Link3 technologies started their broadband service many years ago. All the previous years they were providing connection to corporate users only. Now they are giving internet connection to home users. They are the first company in Bangladesh to provide FIBER OPTIC to home. All the other ISP claims that they provide fiber optic connectivity but in fact they provide connection with CAT 5 cable !

My previous connection was 256 kbps BDCOM connection.

Do remember 256 kbps means 256 kilo bits per second. To convert them to kilobytes, divide the number by 8. Like, 256/8 will gives 32 kilo bytes per second.

I discarded their line because I was getting 20 – 23 kilobytes per second instead of 25 kilobytes. Sometimes the download speed falls below 20 kilobyte and the fluctuation was huge…

Now, I am using Link3 fiber optic broadband. I got the connection on 28th Jan 2010. I live in Dhanmondi so I am lucky that I got their connection because currently they are providing connection to users living in Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara, Niketon, Motijheel, Uttara, Dhanmondi and all adjacent area. I am satisfied with their connection so far and yes they are the true fiber optic broadband provider. Fiber optic cable doesn’t mount directly to LAN card. A converter is used to convert the fiber optic to cat 5 which is then attached to the LAN card. Link3 placed two devices on my home; one is fiber optic joint box and another device is ONU device. I don’t know what’s the function of fiber optic joint box (you can google it out) but ONU devices is like a converter, they convert the fiber optic cable to cat-5 cable which then mounts to LAN card.

Link3 provide the following package:

link3 night doubler package
link3 standard package

Night doubler packages are their main attraction. I am using 192/384 kbps package. Which means during the day I will get 192 kbps (24 kilobyte) and at night I will get 384 kbps (48 kilobyte) ! There are also other package available and you can choose any of them depending on your demand. Since I am a light internet user (not a power internet user) I chose the 192/384 options.

Bandwidth test demonstration:

I tested link3′s bandwidth by speedtest during the day time (7am to 8pm) and at night (8pm to 7am). I obtained the following results:

link3 download upload speed daytime
Daytime 0.19Mb/s (megabits per second) = 190kbps (kilobits per second) = 23.75 KB/s (kilobytes per second)
link3 download upload speed nightime
Nighttime 0.37Mb/s (megabits per second) = 370kbps (kilobits per second) = 46.25 KB/s (kilobytes per second)

Monitoring by network meter gadget:

I repeat the test several times but shows the same result. The bandwidth doesn’t fluctuate at all since the connection is through fiber optic !

Torrent speed:

Ping replies for zxonlinebd.com server:

link3 ping zxonlinebd

Ping replies for home.bdgaming.net server:

link3 ping bdgaming

The ping time ms shown on the images above explains that link3 is excellent for gaming. If you are looking for alternative to expensive wimax in Bangladesh like Qubee wimax or Banglalion wimax then link3 would be the best choice.

>hey bro,
Nice review but i have a question in my mind, that bdcom's connection is to cheap i think. And they are serving very good quality in this cheap rate.

Nasif Abdur Razzaque January 30, 2010 at 6:54 pm

>@raif: BDCOM is not bad at all… What matters is the quality ! Connection through fiber optic which is currently provided b link 3 only will obviously have better quality like constant speed, no fluctuation, no bandwidth loss, thick cable so less chances of tearing etc & etc…

>@nasif, I think you did a lot for Link3 here. I would like to inform you here, Link3 invest to yours and expect yours talents to develop our country. So give your new thought and ideas to link3. Hope BD will be more advance with you people.

Do u find trouble in pulling speeds (w/o dl manager) while streaming videos at night? Like one of my friends using his 512kbps (link3) at night was just able to stream Youtube videos at roughly 256kbps (instead of at least 460kbps out of 512kbps), but again if he used a download manager to dl, he received the total speed. Did it happen to you?, or Is this problem inevitable?

Nasif Abdur Razzaque February 6, 2010 at 2:24 pm

>@swordenium: thanks for informing that. I thought that was due to my hardware problem. After seeing your comment now I am sure it is link3's problem. First the connection was okay ! I can stream youtube or other videos like heaven ! But for the last two days streaming videos taking longer time.. I am so pissed off ! With download manager the speed is absolutely fine.. I think the problem can be solved because streaming videos was fine initially. Need to call link3 call centre.

>@Nasif
Well, actually this problem has been in around for quite a long time. I called their customer support on behalf of my friend who actually uses the connection (256kbps NDP). They were like …….. giving me EXTRA knowledge that flash player can not pull bandwidth, and other stuffs; bla bla. At one point, they replied that it's shared BW; I replied that I know it's shared, but that doesn't mean that I won't be able to stream at least 50% of my theoretical maximum speed. They were baffled that time. I just let them know that since I will be taking their 384kbps NDP package soon; just to stream youtube videos at night, questioned them about their relevancy in poor streaming :D , and commitment. They said that they will look into it, but apparently, it's not yet solved :( .

>@swordenium:
Tell your friend to download the new beta version of flash player. http://www.filehippo.com/download_flashplayer_firefox/

I noticed that my connection is utilizing 100% bandwidth after I downloaded the beta version of flash player. Let me know if the problem still arise

swordenium February 7, 2010 at 4:06 pm

>@Nasif
Ok… I will let him know. Is it consistent? I mean, 100% utilization always hoetese flash beta ta install korar pore?

Nasif Abdur Razzaque February 7, 2010 at 4:34 pm

>Yep..

>I think youtube problem is over with the flush player.
One thing i would like to inform you that Link3 doesn't closed any port of DNS so that any user can explore freely and very swiftly.
But your PC should free from net virus.
SO you can get the test of Link3's Bandwidth.

swordenium February 8, 2010 at 5:38 pm

>@Nasif
Nope. Not happening always. I am trying to get the 384kbps NDP by this 15th, but i'm unsure whether I will be able stream videos if such problem continues. :( I don't need 96KB/sec, 75-80KB/sec paileo khushi, but….i'm unsure etto pabo ki na.

Hi bro,

Can you please tell me where can I see the current available package details? Checked on link3 site but there is no information about available packages! Neither on f-lix.net!! Instead I found only prices listed about different connection types there but no details about those connections/packages!!! Sorry to say but that f-lix site doesn’t really look like web site of a professional service!!!

Thanks!

You have to call them to know about the package details and prices. You can also browse a forum; Thread: “F-Lix (looks good so far)” to know about user’s satisfaction level.

hi

i have recently had link3 install fiber in my home and the connection does indeed seem to be as fast as advertised. however the connection appears to have difficulty when it is attempting to send/receive data from outside bangladesh.

if i run a test at speedtest.net to tbe local server it gives me the results i expect (we have a 1.5mbps connection), however if i run a test to hong kong for example, the maximum i can get is approx, 0.51mbps.

do you know why this would be? is there some restriction on the internet pipe going out of the country?

admin August 15, 2010 at 1:39 am

Hey Jimmy,
Nice to hear that you are satisfied with link3

Jimmy August 15, 2010 at 2:45 pm

Hi, thanks for the response. Did you read my questions?

admin August 15, 2010 at 10:29 pm

Ooops sowi, didn’t notice your question. Nope, there isn’t any restriction in receiving and sending data in and out of the country. My connection is okay and I have full bandwidth while testing my speed from hongkong. Have you tried downloading any file from server outside Bangladesh ?

Jimmy August 20, 2010 at 9:13 pm

Hi,

Despite having paid for a 1.5mbps connection, the maximum download speed i have been able to obtain from either websites outside bangladesh or downloading torrents, has been approximately 50kbps. i should be getting around 120kbps.

Any ideas?

Help!

admin August 21, 2010 at 1:20 am

Hello,
You are paying more but they are giving you less bandwidth ! That’s like cheating ! Contact link3′s 24 hr customer service, Hotline Number (01552153173-5)
Call them and if they can’t fix your connection tell them to send official to your place to see if there’s anything wrong with your cable or the devie. Keep bugging them until you get your connection fixed.

Jimmy August 21, 2010 at 10:45 pm

I contacted them yesterday and they sent a tech around. apparently i had been supplied with the wrong connection. speed seems ok now! thanks for your help!
